WestEast Design Group’s Social Impact Studio played a central role in the creation of IKEA US's prototype for permanent supportive housing, called the Small Home. Designed in collaboration with ARUP, the project integrates trauma-informed design principles, focusing on empathy and the well-being of individuals who have experienced trauma. WestEast led the research and community engagement efforts, including interviews with people experiencing homelessness, to ensure the 480-sqft unit met their specific needs. The prototype, constructed quickly with minimal waste, will be used for further research at IKEA Live Oak before its final iteration is placed in Towne Twin Village, San Antonio’s first permanent supportive housing community. WestEast’s involvement highlights their innovative approach to creating sustainable, supportive housing solutions.
